'MASKNE' How to prevent face mask skin problems.
Posted on January 18 2021
Yes! Maskne is a real problem.
When reading over the different questions people were asking on our live chat and social media, I noticed one question that kept popping up.
People need help with Maskne!!!
For those that may not know, Maskne is the combo of the words “mask” and “acne”, not sure who came up with it, but it’s brilliant.
It doesn't matter your age, it is affecting everyone with all types of skin. The friction of the mask on our skin, leads to irritation causing inflammation, redness, and dry blotchy spots. Add in humidity, heat, dirt, oil, and bacteria trapped under the mask, giving our skin serious congestion.
Here are a few simple things you can do to help and prevent maskne.
First, choosing your mask. Make sure it’s 100% cotton if you are using a reusable mask. The most important thing – WASH IT! I saw a meme that we should wash our masks like we wash our underwear, its true!
How to prevent Maskne! Let’s look at our skincare routines.
- Clean your skin
All clear skin roads lead to clean skin. Choose a cleanser that is soft and gentle, but can clean your pores and pull out any dirt and excess oils that are trapped. We recommend our Detoxifying Charcoal Cleanser. It’s a cleansing gel that deep cleans pores as well as made with activated charcoal to pull out all the dirt and impurities. This face cleanser works well for everyone, even those with sensitive skin.
TIP – Always put the mask on clean skin. Skip makeup when you will be wearing your mask for a long period of time.
- Hydrate your skin
Make sure you are using a moisturizer that is fragrance and toxin free. A good moisturizer will act like a barrier between your skin and the mask. You also want to keep your skin hydrated to prevent dry spots from the mask. Use a moisturizer that is light, but hydrating like our Armour Blue face cream. This moisturizer is packed full of antioxidants and vitamins so it will be feeding and hydrating your skin while wearing your mask.
Ahhh…one of our favourite words around here at Bloomiss. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate! It has so many benefits, so if you are noticing problems with your skin, now is the time to step up your exfoliating game. The Glowing Radiance Masque is formulated with anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric. Turmeric is known to help acne with all its anti-bacterial properties which calm down any inflammation and redness in the skin. The zinc and saffron stem cells will work to cleanse and control breakouts which makes this masque a key for preventing maskne!
During the day you and your skin may need a little reset. Reach for Balance Mist to refresh your skin with rose water, aloe vera, watermelon and other balancing oils to give your skin and you a sense of calm and balance. Now is the time we need to be giving ourselves a little selfcare.
At night, cleanse your skin and apply a calming facial serum. The Blossom Elixir is formulated with rosehip, avocado, evening primrose, and jojoba oils to restore healthy oils to your skin. The anti-inflammatory agents will to help restore and rejuvenate your skin while you sleep.
In the end, we don’t know how long we will have to wear masks, as developments change daily. Get your skincare routine working for you and you will be ahead of the maskne game.
